Awesome Carpet Cleaning Machine5
With a husband, a 2 year old boy, 3 cats and after dropping my quarterly carpet cleaning contract with a local company, it was time to buy a carpet cleaning machine. After doing several days of researching and shopping, I decided to buy the Hoover Agility from Wal*Mart for about $185. My husband told me that I wasted our money, well....he was wrong!!!! After thoroughly vacuuming my carpets, I cleaned out my bagless Hoover Wind Tunnel, and as usual, the bagless cannister was full of cat hair, dust, and dirt. I then proceeded to clean the carpets in my house. The water was disgustingly dirty, almost black!!! After allowing the carpets to dry, I vacuumed my carpets to remove any 'shading'. I was completely amazed!!! The only thing that my vacuum cleaner picked up was a small amount of loose carpet fibers!!! Yes, just carpet fibers!!!

Pros: Comes pre-assembled, extremely easy to operate and I did this without ready the manual, the water tanks are easy to remove, fills, and they snap very back into place with little effort.

Cons: The electrical cord in my opinion is not long enough.

Everyone wants to use it!5
We'd been using a Kenmore canister carpet cleaner a couple times a year for 12 years- a gift from my dad along with a puppy. Well, the dog is 12 years old now and doing fine. The carpet cleaner has been iffy about working and finally broke tonight. We quickly did research on the internet and decided that a Hoover was the one to get. At 10pm we drove down to the local Wal-mart to look at the two Hoover models that were there. We decided on the Agility because of the hand held power brush attachment. Since the downstairs was all prepped (furniture moved and carpet vacuumed) we opened the box and got started. It was truly ready to go right out of the box.
I have never used carpet cleaner soap and I ran across a review that mentioned it wasn't necessary and any soap residue left in the carpet can attract more dirt. Don't hesitate to try plain water yourself. You will still have a muddy filled collection tank.
The Agility is very easy to manuver, the containers were easy to fill and dump (into the toilet)and it left the carpet dryer than our previous machine. It wasn't as noisy as I expected and one of our pups followed me around and laid down- on the finished part of course. I would have continued on the upstairs but my husband found his turn with the machine was lulling him to sleep!
Cleaning up was quick- best done in the kitchen in case of drips.
The booklet mentioned vacuuming after it is dry to remove the tracking lines. I've always done that and find it also removes the last of the dirt that has been drawn up to the surface.
We've been in our new house for 7 months and have 4 dogs (2 under a year). The Agility is a welcomed addition.

it's not perfect but close to it4
I also own the Hoover V2 which is amazing. For cleaning there's nothing like it. Problem is it is so flimsy. From the time I got it the V2 has fallen apart everytime I used it. Other users have had similar problems. It feels like a toy (actually toys are built better...bad example).
The Agility doesn't have a "rinse" feature and leaves the carpet more than fairly damp. Those are my gripes. Other than that it is my staple. Very sturdy and well built (hard to believe it's the same company). Weighs nothing and is so easy to manuveur- unfortunately I think the lack of suction is responsible for that :(
It still does a good job cleaning and the separate rinse session I have to do (I add alittle vinegar to the clear water my second time) probably does a better job cutting the residue. I hate to say it (after all the money I spent on my V2 and the incredible way it cleans) but the Agility is my keeper.

This is the best of the hoover solutions....5
I've tried a couple of the Hoover solutions with my Hoover steamvac agility cleaner...this is clearly the best. No effort cleaning, nice scent and my carpets look like new.

Amazed!!!!5
We just cleaned our carpet with our new "All-Terrain" Hoover cleaner. A sample of this came with the cleaner and we started with it. We have white carpet and small children (came with the house) and you can imagine what our carpet looked like since it had been several months since we cleaned it. It took stains out of the carpet I never dreamed would come out. When we ran out we switched to the "deep-cleansing" cleaner and it did a great job as well but on some old stains they are still visible (although significantly lighter).

Hoover ultra carpet cleaner5
this stuff is the greatest. It is the best I've found for light carpet. I recommend this for any and every one.

  • Amazon.com Review
Using hot tap water and cleaning solution, the 12-amp Hoover SteamVac V2 deep cleans carpet fibers, tough stains, and upholstery. It is also suitable for tile, ceramic, marble, and linoleum floors (though not appropriate for hardwoods). Named for its dual-nozzle construction, the cleaner provides efficient water removal and thorough edge-to-edge cleaning. The nozzle design forces hot air into the cleaning path and automatically rinses carpet clean on the backward pull. The SpinScrub brushes agitate ground-in dirt and can be turned off with a simple switch. Using a two-tank design that holds up to a gallon of water at a time, the cleaner automatically blends the cleaning solution, so you do not have to monitor it. Both tanks feature an enclosed design and convenient handles, making them easy to remove and transport. The recovery tank automatically shuts off suction when full and comes with a built-in lint screen. A removable view window on the nozzle lets you see dirty water returning to the machine.

For above-floor tasks, the cleaner comes with an 8-foot hose, a stair/upholstery tool, and a SpinScrub hand tool with rotating brushes. Conversion to tool cleaning is manual but quick, and you can remove the hose and tool caddy altogether for more streamlined use. The cleaner comes with a carrying handle, a 27-foot cord, quick-release cord hooks, and a foot pedal to release the handle. Fingertip switches and a trigger control the rinsing, washing, and Clean Surge functions. The removable brushes and a beltless design simplify maintenance. Hoover includes two 16-ounce bottles of detergent, one for carpet and one for bare floors, and backs up the machine with a full one-year warranty. --Emily Bedard

    easy breezy4
    I live in a 1000sqft apt with my esposa & 2 pugs
If you don't know, pugs shed every day of their lives!
I've had one for about 3 weeks now and here are my impressions

Super easy to put together, all you need is a screwdriver for 2 screws
It's also a breeze to use and it did a great job on my carpets (don't forget to vacuum first though)
Better than the rug dr I'd rent (those things are filthy!)

So for 2 bedrooms, living, dining, and sofa it took about 2 gallons which means that I had to empty the dirty water twice and refill the clean water twice
I also used about 32oz of soap which is about [$$] if you buy the name brand

Cleaning is also easy, just poor the dirty water in the toilet and rinse it out with water and boom you are set
Like other people have said there is no pour spout so be careful when pouring out the dirty water (you don't want to make a mess)
There are a couple other things to clean up, like the front part that sucks up all the water from the carpet, and some other fitters and the scrub brushes and that whole area
I usually wait till the next day when the unit is dry and just wipe the bottom down and pick of any bunches of lint or dog hair, and clean the front nozzle only when necessary

    Some word about the attachments
First the accessory tray on the back is a bit cumbersome, bulky, doesn't hold the hose very well, and I've found gets in the way of storing the power cord
So, I didn't attach mine and just have it hanging on a coat hanger in the closet

Secondly, the way the hoses attaches to the front of the unit for the sucking and the other to the side for the soap is also not so great
It's not like my vacuum cleaner where there is a tight fit
For the sucking hose you kind of put it in the whole and turn it, but there's nothing to stop it from turning it the other way :(
For the soap hose you just push it in, it doesn't seem very secure because it can easily be pulled out
That being said I had not experienced problems with either falling out though

Next the spin scrub hand tool, it sucks!
I tried to use it for some corners and my sofa and it did not do a good job
I think it's because the spinning brushes powered by the air flow and not a separate motor like the main unit
Don't use it at all, but that's just me

The other stair/upholstery tool is much better
I was able to give my sofa cushions a good clearing

Lastly be careful when done with the attachments because the hose will have some left over dirty water and soap (this is probably the messiest part of the whole thing)

Sorry I don't use the bare floor attachment to comment

Overall, I love this thing to clean my carpets and the sofa
Cleaning is easy, remember it is NOT nonexistent, you DO have things to clean

So close & yet so far away1
Having been so frustrated with my Bissell steam vac that I turned into very small pieces, it was clearly time for a new unit. With a labrador retriever in the house, and a dachshund that my wife refuses to house-train, we are in constant need of a steamvac. I consulted a friend, who suggested the Hoover V2.

I brought it home yesterday and assembled it. Assembly was easy, although I did note that the attachment tools carriage was incredibly flimsy, and did a very poor job of actually holding the tools. The only use I can see for this piece of CPS is if you're storing your steamvac in the garage for a few months. You can't really use the steamvac with the hose wrapped in place, as it doesn't stay in place for very long and quickly gets in the way.

The tanks lift in and out quite easily, and the solution/water tank is far superior to the old Hoover mixing tank. However, it is very "tall", and thus I was unable to fill it from our upstairs bathroom sinks. This was not the case with the previous Hoover and Bissell models that I've owned.

I had it up and running pretty quickly, and was impressed right away. The unit did a great job compared with its unfortunate predecessor. On the first empty of the recovery tank, I did notice that there is no convenient spout, so you have to be careful when pouring out the recovered fluid. I also noticed when I first removed the recovery tank that fluid spilled out as the unit rotated. This was irritating (see the aforementioned dachshund comment).

Overall, yesterday I was quite pleased with the performance, despite the minor inconveniences.

Today, however, I tried to complete the upstairs & stair cleaning with the steamvac, and my opinion of the device and Hoover has reached a low point. As of this morning, the unit was very leaky. Water from the clean tank pours out & down the back of the unit at a ferocious rate. During use, the water spits out behind the unit. It appears that the clean water and the solution are mixed in a piece of foam that sits beneath the solution & water tanks. this foam is retained by a piece of thin (plastic?), which on my steamvac is angled toward the back, exposing the foam at the rear. As this is where the water spits out, I assume that either the foam is oversaturated, or Hoover has just managed to ignore the fact that a leaking steamvac is not an attractive option to the customer.

Being in a fairly bad mood, I proceeded to the Hoover website, to look at the troubleshooting section. No surprise - the troubleshooting part of the website is limited to a collection of trite FAQ's regarding the steamvac, clearly written by someone in marketing from the point of view of "what kind of things might we put on our website to make it look like some customer concerns were being addressed, while really just providing some clever reassurances for people considering purchase."

Now in the mood to unleash some choice pejoratives to the good folks at Hoover, I looked about their website for an email address. I did find a section where I could register the steamvac, and provide not only my email address, but all salient facts about my life. However, despite Hoover's apparent interest in contacting me, they did not provide a means to contact them. This implies to me that: a) they're sick of the volume of email complaining about their shoddy product, b) they just don't care, c) their webmaster is as incompetent as their engineers.

In any case, had I written this review yesterday, I would have rated the SteamVac V2 as a four or five star. Today, however, it gets a 1, and without some fast talking by the repairman, this particular SteamVac will be heading back to the manufacturer.

Slow, but works if used properly.4
My brother is a professional carpet cleaner, and owns his own business. He lives too far away to help me, and told me that the home shampooers were essentially worthless junk. I have helped him on occasion, so I have experience with professional equipment. His equipment and service far exceeds normal "wand" steam cleaners, and represents the best that the industry has. Consequently, I was not expecting much from a home shampooer.

Having said that, this product does work, but not exceptionally well and very slowly. I do not mean this as a negative, as I was surprised it was able to help at all. If you take your time, and do it properly it is an effective cleaning tool. It is far from excellent in quality, and is dreadfully slow if done properly (roughly 5 times longer than professional equipment), but I am very happy with it nonetheless since it noticeably does clean the carpet.

If you do decide to use this product, I strongly recommend at least three passes, per room, which is partially the reason it is so time consuming. This assumes a dirty room of course. The first two passes do with detergent. The third time, just use hot water and no detergent. You absolutely do not want to leave detergent residue on carpets as it attracts dirt and it will resoil very quickly. If you only make one pass, do not use detergent, but only water. The fourth pass I make is the next morning, and again only with water. The carpet can smell pretty foul then, and the fourth pass cleans whatever wicked upped, at least to an extent. It also gets out any additional detergent residue.

If you do make four passes, the quality of the job is not exceptional but certainly adequate. If you make one pass, you will be surprised at how much dirt remains. Just for a test, do it a second time and look at the water. Then remember that if you had not done it that second time, all that would remain in the carpet. The third time the water is still brown, although for me it was much lighter. The fourth time the water is again noticeably clearer, and considering that quite a bit of that wicked up, I think a fourth time the same day may be overkill.

Also remember to move it slowly. It is much better to take twice as long with one stroke than to go twice as fast and take two. It needs time to suck up the fluids, so the quality of the job is very related to how much time you give each stroke.

One last option is to buy better chemicals, rather than use the Hoover detergent. Professional carpet cleaners typically use a pre-spray and often times no detergent at all, the residue issue being the reason for this inclination.

This is an addendum I am writing in May of 2005. My machine died about a month ago, after a long illness. The engine was getting progressively louder and the "rattling" sound it makes when it is shut off got longer. Now the machine has no suction and it is difficult to find a place that does the warranty work. Maybe you will have better luck with yours, particularly since I did use mine quite a bit during the time I had it (probably 30 hours). Overall mine did a pretty good job cleaning but became very loud and unpleasant, and suffered from unreliability.

After this, I bought the Hoover Commercial cleaner, which seems inferior in cleaning capability to this one, but is a more pleasant machine. I was not happy with the cleaning, however, so I finally just bought a real commercial machine (the Hoover Commercial is really a home machine, and not a particularly good one at that) costing roughly 10x as much. The commercial machine is too heavy and requires too much setup time for quick cleanups, so it is nice having one of these little ones for that type of work. In a similar vein, if you need to transport a machine to work on a house that the machine is not in, these smaller machines are well-suited for that. So, even if you get a commercial machine, these smaller machines still have some use, and the reliability problems I ran into would not have occurred nearly so quickly.

    Hoover F5810 SteamVac

    Product Description

Hoover Steamvac for carpets, and upholstry.

    Hoover F5810 Steam Vac5
Used it for the first time and it did a great job on the carpets. Carpets dried fast.

    F5810 works good for me.5
I was impressed with the way it doesn't oversaturate the carpet (unless you just keep going over the area and pressing the squirt trigger a lot.) The suction is very good and the machine is easy to operate. The water is only as hot as you get out of your faucet however, but this was not a concern for me.

I almost bought a Bissell, similar price, but discovered the Bissell had an odd retriever container--it actually sits inside the clean water container, so this doesn't give much room for the dirty water. I didn't actually try out the Bissell, so I can't really criticize it.

I used the Hoover for a very dirty utility room carpet and the only thing I will do different next time is use a Hoover stain remover for some of the ground in dirt stains.

All in all, I found this machine to be MUCH better than ones I had rented from a local hardware store in past years (for a different house). The rental machines are extremely heavy, hard to get in and out of my car and leave the carpets soaking wet. This Hoover machine isjust what I hoped for.

One thing to be aware of, after you take the machine out of the package, check to see if the cap on the clean water container is already loosened. I was following directions to a "tee" and trying like everything to turn the knob to the left to unscrew it and then discovered it was already loose and ready to be lifted out.

I ordered this machine from Amazon also another item previously, and was very happy with Amazon's fast delivery time on both items.

    Hoover is okay so far4
It seems to work just fine. I am going to be looking at it's staying power. I have worn out several carpet cleaners over the years. It's simple to operate and does a good job. It's a little heavy, which every carpet cleaner I've ever owned is, so I guess they must have to have some weight to work properly.

Very Pleased - Worth the Money for Sure!5
I recently purchased this carpet cleaner, got a great deal and only paid $105 for it. I was initially confused because it is called "Lite" on this site but nowhere on the box or papers is the unit called "Lite". I compared the weight of this machine to the regular Hoover SteamVac and they were exactly the same. I liked the design of this one better so I purchased it.

I used it to clean several rooms of carpet so far that have not been cleaned (other than regular vacuuming) in 5 years. I thought it did a great job. Before we purchased this unit, we rented a Rug Doctor to do one of our rooms upstairs. This Hoover unit got the carpets just as clean as the Rug Doctor did. The water output looked pretty much the same level of dirtiness with both machines. The biggest difference was the carpet was left wetter with the Hoover. That was easily handled by setting up a few fans and within 4-6 hours the carpet was dry to the touch and was completely dry all the way down by 8-10 hours.

The Hoover was SO easy to use I almost couldn't believe it. The unit was ready to use right out of the box, all you had to do was fill the water tank. I loved that the motion was basically the same as vacuuming and it was no harder to move this machine then a regular upright vacuum. I used the water spray for the first pass and then usually made 2 more passes with just suction. I was able to finish my rooms very quickly. Based on the look of the water returned after cleaning, the Hoover did a great job of extracting the dirt from the carpets. To me that's the most important thing.

In doing my research to purchase a carpet cleaner, I found that there is no perfect product. The ones that get the carpet drier are usually large and bulky to use. The lighter-weight ones like the Hoover do a great job with the cleaning but don't extract as much of the water leaving the carpet wetter. I feel that for the price, you can't beat this Hoover. It's so easy to use in every way, from set-up to cleaning to clean-up, that having to set up a few fans to help the carpet dry faster is well worth it. For the price and the ease of using the machine, this is one of the best out there.

    Light and effective5
I got this while it was on sale, and was very pleased. It does a good job of cleaning both carpet and furniture. It is light and easy to move around, much easier than the vacuum.

It does have some drawbacks to the design. The intake and outake canisters are a little tricky to open at first but you get the hang of it. Also, to drop the handle back you have to press on the right hand foot pedal and it is a bit hard to get it to release.

As another poster pointed out, it does not suck up the water really great. This is only a problem when you have really tough stains that get overly wet. For normal use, simply pushing it over the spot a few imes without pressing the water release will dry it sufficiently. On the whole, I would say it is an excellent all purpose steam cleaner. However, if you want to clean up pet stains, you might need something that is more like a wet vac that can suck up a lot of water.

I did not have any problems with it cleaning all the stains on the carpet. The carpet looked like new afterwards, with a nice soft nap - and so did the furniture.

    Customer Reviews

    Disgustingly Fun!5
I am a noobie to deep cleaning so maybe my favorable review is from the novelty effect. Nevertheless, this SteamVac was so amazing in extracting a lot of crap from my seemingly 'clean' carpet, that I am a believer now.

Of particular note, this version has a rinse switch which you can interchange between detergent or just plain water. I loved being able to rinse the carpet immediately after shampooing because I hate residue from chemicals.

The carpet barely needed to dry because the SteamVac was so efficient. Most parts were instantly dry, no joke!

Cleaning the SteamVac is a chore, but necessary. Dont make the mistake I made of dumping out the dirty water in the bathtub, clogging up the drainage with carpet balls. Live and learn, I say.

99% of all the stains on my carpet are gone. A stubborn rust stain refused to leave, but I must admit I wasn't expecting it to; it was a heavy rust stain.

The vacuum might be a tad heavy for the more delicate person, but I relished the exercise. I spent about 2 hours cleaning my apartment, and after a little sweat now my carpet is singing. I recommend this product.

A great steamer -- not to be confused with similar models4
A number of reviews listed with this machine are for another Hoover steam cleaner. There are some differences. This machine in some ways is the best, but it doesn't include the hard wood floor attachment -- something some folks say leaks. But it is an option for it. This thing really works great, most of them do. I used one of the older models without the heat function and always had good luck. The hand upholstery tool works great with auto carpet and seats (if cloth). This thing is heavy and a bit loud -- a high pitched whir that'll make cats nervous. But it works well. You don't have to use the Hoover cleaner, many others work fine (Costco). A little pretreater will get out most any stain. We've had no leaks or any other issues after six months. The directions for putting it together could be confusing (and confusion might contribute to leaks -- but shouldn't), but previous experience made it a five minute job here. Bottom line, this is a very good steam cleaner. Price played a part in the decision but it's one of the better ones out there AND it should not be confused with several similar Hoover models that may have had issues. This one is well-built and works fantastically.

Does the Job at a Nice Price4
My decision to purchase this was mostly on price and gauging its ease of use.

Since renting one from the market is around $50 including shampoo, my thinking was this was an appropriate price to pay for this since after three cleanings, it's yours plus you don't have to return anything.

The other factor is ease of use. This is pretty straightforward. The top container holds the clean water and shampoo. After using, the "sucked up" dirty water is in the container at the bottom.

The Hoover here is nice in that both snap in and out pretty easily.

There are some things to keep in mind.

Try to use near boiling hot water (or a mixture of near boiling water and hot water from the faucet) - you will get a more efficent clean. Pour in the shampoo AFTER you put the water in the container - otherwise you'll get a slew of foam instead of being able to fill it with water to its highest level.

Afterwards, the things always leak some (maybe if you pay $400, it's not a problem) so as soon as you finish, take it outside and start to disassemble the thing. Then dump out the dirty water and hose off the dirty water container. If you can leave it outside for a while to let it dry as it will still drip a little.

This model will do about a 50' by 40' room or so before you need to refill with clean water and empty out the dirty water so if you have many huge rooms, this might not be for you ... or your help will grumble as you have to repeat :-)

If there are specific spots, you still need to spray it with one of those carpet cleaner sprays.

The hose attachment is nice for carpeted stairs but the main unit is pretty bulky so plan carefully so it doesn't tip over (water).

The only real con is that it be nice if the power cord was retractable but other than that, it does what it says it does and the two containers are easy to fill & remove.

    GREAT INVESTMENT!5
I was hesitant that this would be a worthwile purchase because hoover makes some pretty junky vacuums, however, after reading reviews decided to buy it! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND! I have had this cleaner for approximately 8 months and have used it several times already, and it is truly amazing for a few reasons.

    1) It doesn't truly "steam" carpet - BUT if you put some boiling water in reservoir with detergent it does improve cleaning, but I have cleaned with regular hot tap water with good results too.
    2) You will be disgusted, amazed, and pleased at how much dirt this thing gets out of your carpets. Secondly, it really fluffs it up with the 5 rotating brushes.
    3) Works great on removing stains quickly (I have an almost 2 year old) so, juice, milk, throwup, you name it! etc. It cleans it out completely. Clean surge also helps.
    4) In a couple of hours (or less) the carpet is really DRY!!!
    5) Finished carpet "feels" clean. You can get down on it and you just know it is clean like a line dried towel.
I haven't tried it on upholstery or car but will eventually. I am sure that it will do an equally fantastic job!
It is really addicting to use. I have used it probably 4 or 5 times already, no problems. It is true that it will leak a little after you are done with it, but it can easily be wiped up. Can't really complain that much about it. Results are amazing! I hope it lasts a long time. It is definitely worth the money considering what it costs to have it professionally done and also cost of renting a machine (which doesn't do half the job).

    Excellent SteamVac4
I have three dogs and have had a lot of traffic on my carpets. This steamvac cleaned the carpet areas very well. I was very impressed with the amount of dirt that it pulled up versus other steamvacs that I have used on the carpets in the past. It definatley works much better than the kind you can rent from the grocery store. The only issues that I had with it was that it took a long time to clean the carpets (had to go really slowly for it to clean well), but that could have been because the carpets were so dirty. The handheld cleaner for upholstery was a little bulky for small jobs.
Overall I am very happy with my purchase. Hoover offers an excellent warranty also.

Fantastic product! Great job on carpet, pleasantly surprised on tile.5
I have previously used the Bissell 9400 ProHeat 2X Select Upright Deep Carpet Cleaner to clean the inevitable stains associated with cats and potty training little boys from my Berber carpet. A friend has that cleaner, so I borrowed it on several occasions before finally deciding to get one of my own. Just before I was ready to buy, Good Housekeeping ran a review on the Hoover SteamVac so I looked it up on Amazon. I read the reviews and decided to take my chances with it.

I am amazed at the difference in the two machines. The Bissell used to shear off fibers from the carpet and leave a nasty trail of what looks like hairballs behind as I worked. The clean and dirty tanks are in the same unit which is clever, but almost impossible to clean.

The Hoover has two tanks - one for clean hot water with a compartment for the cleaning solution, and one for the dirty water. Both water tanks hold a gallon. I had no problems loading the clean tank or removing the dirty tank. No dripping of dirty water, no puddles on the rug or the kitchen floor when changing tanks.

Like I said before, I've cleaned my entire house several times with the Bissell machine, but I was amazed at the almost muddy water that came out of the carpet. It was as if I'd never cleaned the floors before. The dirty tank is easy to rinse out and reattach. The trick is to "recline" the machine so the clean tank is laying on the ground attached to the handle. Unsnap the clips and the dirty tank comes right off with no problem at all. Clean it out, snap the lid back on and clip it back into place and then you can stand the handle back up and deal with the clean tank.

The suction on this machine is amazing. It used to take hours and hours for the carpet to dry when I used the Bissell. I'd have to turn the fans on high and let them go overnight to have dry carpets in the morning. Two hours after cleaning the carpet (2 cleaning/rinse passes plus a rinsing only pass) and the floors were nearly dry.

I tested the Hoover on my kitchen tile. I hate ceramic tile. I will never have it in another house, but I'm stuck with it for now. I usually use the Vapor Clean II steam/pressure cleaner on the tile, but decided to give the Hoover a try since it came with the cleaning solution for the job. I wouldn't want to use it every time I clean the kitchen floor, but for a quick cleaning before company comes it'll do the trick. Again, I did not have any puddle problems. If you release the trigger just before you finish your pull stroke you won't have any puddling to speak of. The Hoover does a great job sucking up the water on the tile and even gets the water from the grout. It doesn't do a great job on grout because that's not what it's designed to do. I'll stick to my VaporClean and the special brush I have for that.

I'm also happy with the amount of cleaner used. The Bissell goes through cleaning solution at a much faster rate than the Hoover does. I like that, since leaving soap on the fibers is just going to make the floor get dirty faster.

The only things I'm not thrilled with:

The cleaning solution dispenser is integrated with the clean water tank. I wish it came with a spout or something attached so that pouring out leftover solution wasn't so messy. I know I could leave the solution in there between uses, but I have already had to pour out leftover carpet solution to switch to the hard surface cleaner - then I had to put the hard surface cleaner back in the bottle to switch back for more carpet work. Some sort of retractable spout or a reversable plug with a spout attached would be great.

The hose attachment is kind of flimsy. I've had the whole hose assembly fall off several times as I was changing tanks. It's not a huge deal, but it's annoying to the point that I'm considering taking that part off and storing it separately until I need to use the hand tools.

Buy this cleaner - you won't be disappointed!

    Hope You Don't Need Parts4
This is a great steam-vac. It does a great job, easy to use, and the other reviewiers have covered the high points pretty well.

On the other hand, the thing that is driving me nuts is trying to buy replacement parts. All I need are the two clips that hold the receiver tank on the unit's base. My girlfriend managed to break them and now the receiver unit doesn't seal as well and the unit doesn't clean as well either due to lack of suction, minor leakage, etc.

I've tried Hoover. I've tried the other stores that sell them. You can't just buy parts for the damn thing. So people should just know - if something breaks and it is out of warranty, you may just be buying a new unit as opposed to buying a few dollars worth of plastic.

With that one caveat, it is a great cleaner. Just don't break anything and don't let anyone else break anything.

    Works Great!5
So i've been looking for a steam cleaner for over a week, reading reviews on any steam cleaner that has a review to try to choose one that will work for my family. With all the negative feedback on the Hoover I was disappointed and thought about changing brands. I had a hoover spin scrub and it has worked wonderfully for over 5yrs but with bringing up and down the stairs and my son letting it pound on the stairs the front plate broke off. Although i could get it repaired, honestly i felt it was a good excuse to get myself a new one and chose to give my old one to charity.
Of all the reviews i have read, the one that i felt had any true meaningful information was a gentleman that was an engineer that said that the plastic on the tank was too brittle. Armed with this information, i did go to my local Hoover store to see what they had in stock. I was ready to purchase another spinscub or to have mine repaired.
I purchased the All-terrain steamvac after talking to the rep. She did not dispute that the tanks plastic is more brittle and should be able to withstand a little more abuse, however, she also said that all of the people that have come into the store to have the tanks replaced, have abused it in some way. The plastic is not made for EXTREMELY hot water, so if your tap water is extremely hot, then fill the tank with some cooler water. the hotter temp. will crack the tank. She said her hot water heater is set so high that when you run only hot water it is too hot to touch. and she mixes her water with cold to get the temp. right. The other scenerio she explained is people dropping the tank when it is full of water. In all the years i can't remember ever dropping the tank so i wasn't concerned about that. And the last scenerio she explained that one woman had her teenager using the machine and had shoved the tank into place and it cracked somehow.
i tried replacing the tank myself in the store and it seemed pretty simple. so i bought it.
i have only had it for a few days but have already cleaned with it. and i love it.something must be wrong with the other reviewer's machine because i filled mine with 16oz. of cleaner and have cleaned my formal living room, formal dining, family room, guest room, stairs and basement , probably close to 1500sq. ft. and still have over half of the solution in it.
The new design is much better than the spinscrub. The hose for the hand attachments attaches in the front so it won't crack at the base like in the older models. I like that the cleaning solution is in a separate container so when you run out of clean water or the clean water gets cold, you can just refill the water side without having to waste cleaning solution or needing to measure out solution every time you need to fill the tank.
The rinse button is nice when you've sprayed down a stain in the carpet and it gets too soapy, then just flip the button and it only dispenses water.
The people I talked to at the hoover store say that most of the repairs with the valves involve the solution that is used. Oxy-clean eats at the rubber and then they don't seal properly. Never put oxy-clean into the tank. It is fine to use the spray oxy on the carpet but not the powder stuff.
i have to say that it cleans great. My dog barfed some green stuff on my carpet a week ago and since i haven't had anything to clean it up with, it has just sat in the carpet. Well the stain is gone and it sat in the carpet for a week!
The dirty water tank is always coming up with dirt and stuff. The dirt stains in my carpet from my dogs/kids are gone and the carpet looks great. I am very happy with it. I will buy the extended 3yr warrenty on the machine. For 50bucks it will protect my investment in case i change my mind about it in a few months!
But I recommend for anyone go to your local shop. I read a lot of the reviews with women bitching about the tank not fitting into the bathroom sink or the cord not being long enough. Personally, I don't want a small tank that fits in my sink. I have too much carpet to clean and the smaller the tank, the more I have to refill it. We've all had those days when nothing is going our way. Just relax. Get a grip! It's just a steam cleaner and our country is at war!!! Hope this was helpful!

    Works Great5
I saw the product at a retailer, then saw it priced less on Amazon (plus no tax or shipping), so I said what the heck, try it. I have a medium-tan carpet and two dogs and two cats. The cleaner was easy to assemble. All you need is a phillips screw driver. I'm not to swift at using carpet cleaners, but once I got the hang of it, it was easy to use and it REALLY WORKED!

One of the attractive features is the large waste tank. It allows you to cover allot of area before stopping to empty it. Also, the vacuum really sucks up the water/cleaner solution in the carpet, the carpet dried really fast. I wouldn't hesitate using it the same day if I were hosting a family get together. I highly recommend this SteamVac.

Does what it is suppose to do - Suck Up Water5
I tried a Bissell and was very unhappy with the results. A good carpet cleaner should put down the chemical and then suck up as much water as possible. The bissell would put down the water but would hardly suck anything up. I went and got this Hoover and was very impressed with the sucking ability. I also like how there is a separate tank for clean water and another tank for dirty water. I can actually see how much dirty water there is. With the bissell, they use the same tank using a bladder for the clean water.. with that, you can't tell how much dirty vs clean water you have.

Overall, this is a good price for what you get and I would suggest the Hoover over the Bissell.

    Great Steamer Vac!5
I've owned this Steamer for a month now, before this the only other steamer I have used was a 15 year old Bissel. I have used it 3 times, and I have to say, I love this thing! It did a great job on my 5 year old high traffic carpet. I did not have any stains or anything, but it really made the carpet stand up again, and it made a noticable difference. This steamer is super easy to use, both tanks can be removed easily and quickly, with no mess. The rotating brushes pop off easily for cleaning. Removing hair or whatever doesn't go into the tank is also very easily removed. I would highly recommend this to anyone, especially for the price. With the exception of adding water, this is almost as easy to use as a regular vacuum cleaner.

    This house is clean!!!5
I had the older version of this machine. I bought it about 6 years ago and after attempting to clean the rugs last month I realized it was no longer picking up the water. Opened it up and saw that the internal suction hose had split in half. That was it .. time to find another cleaner. I have had good luck with Hoovers but did a TON of research before settling on this machine. I have a dog and a toddler and both do a number on my rugs. Juice, food, crayons, spit up, urine and everything else under the sun has ended up on my carpet in the past 2 years. I did not take care of my previous Hoover so it wasn't the best in its later life. I just brought the new one home and oh my god, the water was black. I did not think anything could bring my carpets back but this did. They are so soft and clean. I love this machine because it has a rinse button if you want to make sure you have gotten all the soap out. I use really warm water and the machine directs hot air onto the carpet as you make your passes. The carpet dried super fast and just looks fantastic. I had to fill and empty the containers 4 times for my combination living / dining room but hey, I'm not complaining now that I see the results. I also like this machine because you do not mix the detergent in with the water. This is great because if you have detergent left over you just pour it back into the bottle. Based on my previous experience, here is what I learned and can pass on to future Hoover SteamVac owners:

    1. Clean your machine after each use. That means taking apart the brushes and washing out the front nozzle. This is an investment and if you want it to continue working like it did the first day, you need to take care of it.
    2. Do not leave left over or dirty water in the tank when you put it away. This will wear away at the joints and increases the chances the leaks.
    3. Do not leave left over detergent in the tank .. see #2.
    4. Read the directions when you put it together and make sure you read how to use this rather than just take it out and turn it on. I never read the first manual and didn't realize I should have been cleaning and using the spray button a totally different way.

This is a great machine and I hope it will last just as if not longer now that I know how to take care of and use it properly.

Best carpet cleaner I've ever used5
I just got this carpet cleaner from Amazon.com and I am so happy with it. It outcleans everything I've ever used before, including professional cleaning companies. I owned a Kirby years ago and it can't hold a candle to this Hoover cleaner. I found it was much easier to use than the rug doctor, which I've rented many times, and since I own it, I don't have to haul it back to the store and I have all the time I want to clean my carpets.

It was very easy to use, and I particularly like the clean water rinse feature. It gets all the detergent residue out, and my carpet was soft and lofty after cleaning. Just think, you wouldn't wear your clothes washed and not rinsed.

The power is awesome, my carpet was practically dry when I finished. I got back very close to the amount of water that was dispensed. My carpet was dry enough to walk on in an hour and vacuum in 2 hours. This machine is so well made that I look forward to having soft clean carpet for years to come. It has the quality that I expected from a Hoover. I researched all brands of cleaners dilligently on the net and even looked at some brands, including Bissell, in a store before I decided on this particular Hoover machine. I've never been so happy while cleaning my carpets before. I had it out of the box and ready to go in minutes. It's as easy to use as a vacuum cleaner, plus, Amazon's sale price was cheaper than any price for the same machine that I found. I am a happy camper with this purchase!

    WOW! Amazing Cleaner. Very Happy.5
This carpet cleaner is amazing!!! We have owned several cleaners in the past. Most recently a Bissel - after the second trip to get the Bissel it fixed and then to only have it braking again, we finally gave up. And I started renting a rug doctor to clean our carpets at least 2 times a year. We have three pets and then my husband and myself, and we live in the desert with all the dust and mud that tracks in from outside - and honestly we are not messy people. I am kind of a freak when it comes to our carpets and keeping them clean. 3 months ago I rented a rug doctor and cleaned all of our carpets, and within the couple of weeks it was starting to feel like I had never cleaned the carpets. I decided to try to get another cleaner.

I found this Hoover on Amazon and read the fantastic reviews, so I decided to give it a try. I tried to find it in a local story but had no luck. I ordered it last weekend on Amazon and it was here before this weekend started - quick shipping. I cleaned all of our carpets yesterday and they look fantastic! My husband said (several times) that it looks better than when I rented the rug doctor and better than when we had the Bissel. BRAVO Hoover - you have made an awesome product! The cleaner is very easy to push around - almost like a vacuum. The attachment was simple to use to clean in those hard to get to spots. And the whole thing was very simple and quick to rinse after I was done. I am very impressed with the whole thing.

This produce it truly an A+ for me.

Other attachments include a bare floor nozzle and a powered hand tool that is also ideal for upholstery or small carpet areas. All tools are mounted on the front of the vac in a handy case. Very good machine5
If your new machine LEAKS, see note #2 below. I am just amazed at how many people write that their machine leaked from day one, and they returned it. It will leak if you skip a crucial one-time set-up step.

Paid $170 at Best Buy. This is my first carpet cleaner so I have nothing to compare it to except my own expectations. Even though the name is SteamVac, like all the others in this class of cleaners, there is no Steam to it. That's just false marketing, but all the manufacturers do it, so no particular knock on Hoover.

First, let me say I'm ashamed to admit that our carpet hadn't been cleaned in 4 years, and that we live in the country where lots of dirt gets tracked in from outside. So the carpet was pretty darn dirty. The Hoover F5914-900 did a very nice job the first time I used it - a drastically noticeable difference in the appearance of the carpet. The water in the dirty water receptacle was black. Did it return the carpet to new condition? No, impossible. Will it take another treatment or two to really get it clean? Yes, that is the price I pay for ignoring wet-cleaning the carpet for years. One of this cleaner's best features is the ability to dry the carpet quite thoroughly. Since the front of the machine is made of clear plastic, you can see when you're vacuuming up water. If you want to dry the carpet as much as possible, keep vacuuming until you no longer see water being pulled up. As time has passed, the SteamVac has done an excellent job of maintaining my carpets.

My only gripe is that the dirty water container fills up too quickly and should be a little bigger. Ideally, the dirty water receptacle "should" be full right as you run out of clean water. Then, you shut down, empty the dirty water, refill the clean water and back to work. But this process gets out-of-sync with the dirty water receptacle filling up before you run out of clean water. So this can be a little inconvenient, but not a show-stopper.

The machine is well constructed but it IS plastic, with lots of compartments and latches and hose holders, etc, so one must simply be careful or those things will no doubt break off.

    A few other notes:
    1. If you are not the type to read manuals, do read this one. Assembly and operation are easy if you sit down and read the manual through before starting. It's not like a vacuum cleaner where you just plug it in and go.

    2. My machine leaked badly BUT it was my own fault. There is a one-time only setup procedure where you squeeze the trigger and push the Clean-Surge button to lock a rod into place. Push the Clean-Surge button firmly. There may be a loud SNAP which sounds like you broke something, but you didn't. Until you get that snap, the Clean-Surge (which releases extra water-cleaner solution) is on all the time, hence the leaking. I didn't push the button hard enough initially, so I had the leak problem.

    EDIT December 2007
Apparently many people are assuming that without a loud snap, the Clean Surge will not work. All that matters is that your machine doesn't leak. If your SteamVac doesn't leak, it is assembled properly and the Clean Surge will work!!! The only reason I emphasized the "snap" was because so many people were having leak problems, which are easily solved. And it's possible that Hoover has changed the design after getting so many returns from people who didn't read the instructions in the manual. So don't get hung up on the snap. If your machine does leak after assembly, you know what to do.

    3. ANY time it seems like there is no suction, the problem is that something is not seated properly. It is easy to snap the lid onto the dirty water container without lining it up properly, which causes a vacuum leak. If there is a vacuum leak, there is no suction at the bottom of the machine, where it is needed to suck up water from the carpet. So recheck the dirty water lid.

    4. If you have velvet or velvetine furniture, do NOT use the powered tool, use the utility tool. The powered tool is too strong for delicate fabric.

    5. Like others have suggested, find a cheap alternative to the Hoover brand carpet detergent. One gallon of water doesn't clean a lot of carpet, and at 5 oz of soap per gallon, you go thru it fast.

    6. Always be sure to dry vacuum your carpet with a regular vacuum cleaner first before using this machine to wash it. Be sure to remove and clean the brushes when you're done using this machine. Otherwise hair, thread, and balled up carpet fibers will dry on them and between them. Then the brushes won't turn. These are not "use and put away" machines like vacuum cleaners, they're "use, clean, and put away".

    7. Here's something I do which you *might* want to try. For a very dirty carpet, I fill a cheap plastic 2 gallon watering can (or smaller for a smaller carpet) with hot water and a tablespoon or 2 of Oxy Clean. I then sprinkle the carpet heavily, being careful not to soak it. This saves trips to the sink to load up on clean, soapy water. Then use the Hoover normally.

    8. Others have suggested using boiling water. Not for me, thanks. Too dangerous to handle and unnecessary, unless you've spilled or tracked in grease.

After reading countless reviews here, I have concluded that the problems people have encountered are from failing to properly set up the machine initially, failing to seat the dirty water lid properly, or failing to clean the machine after use. I recommend this Hoover. It won't perform miracles, but I think if it is not abused it will last a long time and do an excellent job of maintaining a carpet.

    Great cleaning5
The F5914 really cleans carpets well. On my worst carpet area, the cleaner did as well as a commercial carpet cleaner. I recommend the following to make it a successful cleaning:
    1) I supplement the hot water with some boiling water to really get the temperature up. By the time the water hits the spray nozzle, it has really cooled off so make it hotter. Bissell uses a heater, but it can't be that powerful without reducing motor power. Best to supplement.
    2) Patience. Go slow and go over really bad areas. You will HAVE to pretreat and hand wash heavy stains, but so do the pros. Don't expect a diamond out of coal. You still have to do the work.
    3) Clean often. I have one carpet that I waited way too long and it just won't come clean. The pros can't and I can't. BIG lesson learned there.

Have fun with this. I can't believe how much dirt there was in my "clean" areas, so it will be great to have this around to clean when I desire to. I saved more than the price of the cleaner this weekend.

    Cleans like a pro5
I'm very pleased with the Hoover F5914-900 Steam Vac. This is my first home steam cleaner. I delayed purchasing one because I never thought a home cleaner could do as good of a job as the pros. But this Hoover made me a believer. I used it to clean up pet stains and the smell and stains are long gone. The suction and scrubbing are an A+.
